Insight
I love working out. I love learning about training. I love watching YouTube training montages. I love talking about programming, coaching philosophies, races, and goals.
But man oh man, do I HATE starting to workout.
I've trained consistently for over 20 years. I almost never miss a workout unless it's a planned rest day. And yet, I still struggle to start all the time.
Here are a few things that help:
Have a goal you’re working towards. A race, a season, an event- something. It’s a lot harder to skip a training session when you know a day is coming when you have to show up and perform.
Create a routine. It’s easier to make the decision once that you train at 6:30am than to negotiate with yourself every day about when you’re going to workout.
Follow a training program. Don’t waste energy figuring out what to do every day. There are so many awesome training programs out there. Find a program, coach, or plan that excites you and aligns with your goals and commit to it.
Have training buddies. First of all it’s just more fun to throw down with people sometimes- but also, the added push and accountability can go a long way.
Be grateful you CAN train. There’s nothing more important than your health- take care of your body, and never take for granted your ability to move.
For me once I start moving, I’m almost always glad I did.
As cliche as it is, no one regrets a workout they showed up to.
So if you’re struggling to get moving- just commit to starting. You’ll probably find that once you’re in it, you feel a lot better.
