Insight

It sucks not knowing how to do something.
Feeling like everyone else knows what they're doing and you're still figuring it out.
Feeling so far behind you don't even know what questions to ask yet. You don't know what you don't know.

But here's the thing… You can't skip this part. You have to work through it.
Do what you can. Learn what you can. And trust that with enough time and effort, you'll start figuring things out.

I've felt this way SO MANY times.

Maybe the most drastic was when I tried out for a women's professional tackle football team. I knew almost nothing. There was SO MUCH I didn't understand. But I decided to go all in. I asked questions. I studied. I practiced. And I tried to outwork everyone.

Eventually, I figured some things out. I was never the best football player on the field, but I won three national championships, became an All-American, and was a captain in my final season.

I'm sure glad I didn't let the embarrassment and discomfort of being a beginner stop me.

And now? I'm right back there again.

I'm starting a podcast, and this weekend I literally spent HOURS plugging and unplugging cords, fiddling with technology, and googling things I didn't understand. There were more than a few moments where I genuinely wondered if I'm tech savvy enough to figure this all out.

But I've been here before- so I remind myself I know what to do:
Figure out one thing.
Then the next.
Then the next.
Keep chipping away.
Eventually, the things that feel impossible now will feel normal.

You'll go from beginner, to novice, to capable... and maybe someday, really freaking good.
But you don't get to skip ahead.

You don't get to become a pro without first being a beginner.
So show up. Ask questions. Learn. Screw some things up. Keep going.
Lean into being a beginner.

Question

What have you been avoiding because you don't know how to do it yet?

Workout

EMOM 30
Min 1: :40 Practice a Skill
Min 2: 12/10 Cal Bike, Row, or Ski
Min 3: 10 Burpees
(*Repeat 10x)

Coach’s Notes:

  • For the skill, choose something you're not great at yet: double unders, handstand push ups, pull-ups, toes-to-bar, box jumps, a new lift, etc. The point is choose something that is appropriately challenging for you that you need to work on. Don’t worry about getting in a ton of reps- just work the skill.

  • Use the other two minutes to keep your heart rate up and keep moving. Adjust reps as needed to stay moving, steady, and in control.
