Insight
There have been a few distinct times in my life when I remember being really nervous about what I was about to do. Nervous enough that I almost let the fear stop me.
One of those times was when I opened my gym. As excited as I was, I also remember asking my dad, “What if it doesn’t work out?”
He reminded me that there are no guarantees in any profession. All you can do is give your best effort, and remember that the success or failure of any one thing isn’t permanent.
Well, I ran that gym for ten years, and it ended up being more successful than I could have imagined. If I had let fear stop me, I would have missed out on so many amazing experiences - and the impact that place had on other people’s lives.
There have been other moments like that too. Times when I almost let fear win, but instead decided to move through it and just take the next step in front of me.
Recently I’ve been feeling that same mix of nerves, excitement, doubt, and possibility as I start working on a new project - creating an endurance run and ruck race/event/challenge.
There are parts that really excite me. But there are also parts that feel overwhelming: permits, insurance, budgets, marketing, investing time and energy into something new.
When I feel that overwhelm creeping in, I remind myself of the same thing I’ve learned before: I don’t need to have everything figured out.
Honestly, it’s kind of funny to think that you ever could.
All I need to do is take the next step. Ask questions. Do research. Learn from people who’ve done it before.
Nerves before starting something new are normal - especially when it’s something that matters to you.
But you don’t need certainty to begin.
You need to take action and have faith.
You have to take the next step in front of you. Then the next. Then the next.
Build momentum. Work through doubt. Commit to figuring it out.
Because the truth is, we never know how things will work out.
But if we never commit to the effort, we’ll never know what could have been.
And we’ll never leave the impact we’re capable of leaving.
So don’t let fear stop you from doing what you feel called to do.
Work through it.
